Can we all first learn what an actual pyramid scheme really is? Here's the definition: "a form of investment (illegal in the US and elsewhere) in which each paying participant recruits two further participants, with returns being given to early participants using money contributed by later ones."

Based on the definition and the chart above, it's pretty easy to see that doterra (and most MLMs) are NOT Pyramid Schemes. The rich don't get richer based on the recruiting of others.
So, why did doterra choose the MLM route? If their oils are the best in the world then why not sell straight from their website or offer them in reputable health stores?
Here's why:
"Sharing essential oils is a unique experience, and the founders of doTERRA recognized that a sales model just as unique would be needed. In order to best facilitate personal essential oil experiences, doTERRA utilizes a direct selling model that allows distributors to work with customers as opposed to mass marketing. This more individual approach allows individuals to experience for themselves the incredible power of essential oils while also developing relationships of trust. This model also created the opportunity for individuals and families to achieve their dreams of financial independence. Over 2 million Wellness Advocates, now use and sell doTERRA products around the world." (reference here)
Doterra v. Traditional Employment
Why would anyone want to work for an MLM? Here is why. Traditional employment has few people at the top (managers, CEO, CFO, owners, etc) with several underneath. at doterra, anyone is able to be at the so-called "top."
A fellow doterra businesswoman, Rachel, says it best:

The top rank has no limit as to how many people can earn it. The opportunity is wide-open for whoever wants to go for it and because of how doTERRA has structured the compensation plan there’s no competition – you can’t hit a high rank without helping a lot of other people hit their goals and ranks. doTERRA has a beautiful culture of cooperation and collaboration. Unlike traditional employment, my position is not threatened when others on my team are advancing. It’s a beautiful thing! (reference here)
So whether you have a high school diploma, or an M.D. in medicine, anyone can be a part of the top. If you have grit, passion, are coach-able, teachable, and some basic common sense and business sense, you can do it. The ones who don't reach the top are because they quit when it got tough. After all, this is a BUSINESS. If you aren't ready to start your own business, put the hours in, dedicate your time and resources, then this isn't for you.
Part Two will talk about what sets doterra apart from other MLM companies (with the compensation plan, Co-Impact Sourcing, Healing Hands Foundation, product first mentality, etc) and why you need to know that to get started.
