Let's dive in to what exactly IS Breast Cancer? Well, in layman’s terms it is abnormal cells found in the breast tissue, most commonly the lobules or ducts.

“Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality (a “mistake” in the genetic material). However, only 5-10% of cancers are due to an abnormality inherited from your mother or father. Instead, 85-90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general.” (https://www.breastcancer.org/sympt…/understand_bc/what_is_bc)

When those abnormal/cancerous cells spread to the lymph nodes under your arm, then there is the chance they can spread to other parts of the body more easily. This is why we have different Stages of Breast Cancer. On a scale from 0-4 (0 being noninvasive where the cancer cells remain in original location and stage 4 being invasive cells that have spread to other parts of the body) you can know what type of battle you are facing when diagnosed and better know what treatment options are most needed.

So, how can you find out if you have 'abnormal cells' in your breast tissue? We will discuss tomorrow about BSE (Breast Self-Exams) and if they are actually helpful or not...And also how to do them.

>> In the meantime, have you been taught how to do a BSE? And what age should you get your FIRST mammogram?
